Enabling novel dispersion and topological characteristics in mechanical lattices via stable negative inertial coupling

Mechanical topological insulators have enabled a myriad of unprecedented characteristics that are otherwise not conceivable in traditional periodic structures. While rich dynamics, new developments the domain mechanical systems hindered by their inherent inability to exhibit negative elastic or inertial couplings owing inevitable loss dynamical stability. The aim this paper is, therefore, remedy challenge introducing class architected metamaterials (AIMs) as platform for designing lattices with novel and dispersion traits. We show carefully coupling elastically supported masses via moment-free rigid linkages invokes dynamically stable coupling, which is essential classes need such interconnection. potential proposed AIMs demonstrated three examples: (i) analogue Majorana edge states, (ii) square diatomic AIM can sustain quantum valley Hall effect (classically arising hexagonal lattices), (iii) tetratomic corner modes. envision presented framework will pave way plethora robust systems.
